Breeders Cup Prediction & Betting Tips 11/03/2023:
The Breeders’ Cup gets underway at Santa Anita (California) on Friday afternoon. The opening day primarily focuses on the Juveniles and here at Sport Preview, our Racing experts have looked through the card and found their two best bets to start the weekend.
2:40 ET – NetJets Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies
Tamara
The standout 2-year-old on Fridays card at Santa Anita is surely Tamara. She has won both starts very impressively for Richard Mandella and she had a quality field floundering when she went clear to win the Debutante Stakes at Del Mar last time.
She ran an incredible time of 1:22.81 to win that contest over 7-furlongs and found plenty in the closing stages despite setting very quick fractions and hitting the front at the halfway point. The fourth-placed Chatalas has come out and won a Grade 2 since to boost the form and on the evidence of that race, it is very hard to see her being beaten if getting a clear run.
3:20 ET – Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf
Dreamfyre
On paper this race is wide open, but unlike some of the other races on the Turf track this weekend, the European challenge is slightly lacking.
Porta Fortuna is probably top of the pile for Donnacha O’Brien, but the form of her win in the Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket is easy enough to pull apart and her 4 wins have all come on a straight course. A better case could perhaps be made for Laulne, who will make her first start for Philip D Amato. She won the Group 3 Prix Six Perfections at Deauville in July for Yann Barberot where she handled the bend perfectly and she looks just the type to thrive in the US with a more truly run racing style. However, her best form has come over 7-furlongs on soft ground and after a long season, she may be a more attractive proposition after a winter break.
There looks to be an angle into this race with one of the local runners and at the current prices, the best value on offer looks to be Dreamfyre. Trained by O.J. Jauregui, she already has a win at Sant Anita on her CV after she landed the Grade 3 Surfer Girl stakes here over the mile at the start of last month. She was able to dictate the early pace in that race before the front pair kicked clear off the home bend, but she handled the track well and ran some fast closing sectionals to suggest that this drop back to a sprint trip shouldn’t cause her any issue. Although she has gone from the front so far, her trainer seemed adamant in his post-race interviews that she doesn’t have to lead and will be just as happy if she has to be settled in behind. In a large field, this race is likely to be run at a strong early pace and so the fact that she has already proven she is capable of staying further bodes well.
At a double-figure price, she looks too big and is worth chancing win and place.
